tomato pruning

i let my tomatoes get ahead of me (they are wild and unstaked). i am trying now to catch up with them. what are the basic do's and don't for tomato pruning? thank you.

Hi Doug,

You want to prune off the smaller shoots at a distance of 1 foot to 1.5 feet off the ground. After this height, the shoots should be allowed to expand in their natural form. Some varieties of tomatoes cannot support their own weight. With those, you should consider tying the shoots to a trellis or some other support structure.
